Disaster Preparedness NewsNational Preparedness Month is Touted by Government Months in Advance of Actual EventThe “Ready” Campaign is busy preparing its members for their most important annual event. Coalition members are being contacted and numerous events and initiatives are being planned. The important event everyone is all worked up about; National Preparedness Month. A record 1800 coalition members will all work together to host over 1000 separate, smaller events. The way the government is publicizing for the event, you’d assume we were in the middle of National Preparedness Month. In fact, National Preparedness Month isn’t until September (www.ready.gov). So why all the pre-planning, advertising, and excitement? What exactly is National Preparedness Month and why is the government trying so hard to promote its message to everyone in the country? Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the nationwide effort urges Americans to look for simple ways to prepare for unexpected emergencies in their homes, schools, or offices. The stated goal of the program is to “raise public awareness as to the importance of preparing for emergencies”. Special importance is focused on family preparedness and the valuable role an individual can play in helping those who are not prepared. It seems even the government can’t overstate the importance of having a quality home survival kit. Even basic items such as emergency water or emergency food can be overlooked and completely forgotten. It’s in times like these that the government needs to step in and take matters into its own hands. One way it does this is through its grassroots effort “Citizen Corps”, which helps locals receive emergency response training, practice in community exercises, and train to become first responders (www.dhs.gov). It seems that the government has finally come to understand the truly life-saving benefits of preparation and of passing that message on to others. This is one thing we can relate to very easily.
